The Tarboro Association of Saltwater Sportsman (TASS) is holding the 2020 First Hickory Shad Contest in memory of Rick Goines,
Goines, an avid hickory shad fishermen and member of TASS, who along with his wife, Linda, started the annual first hickory shad contest, died June 19, 2019, following a lengthy illness.
In announcing the contest, TASS said, “Rick loved shad fishing and even more he loved to see others sharing in the fun. For the upcoming 2020 shad season, TASS will continue the tradition that Rick and wife Linda started several years ago.”
There is no entry fee and the contest is open to everyone.
The first person to present a fresh, hook-and-line-caught Tar River hickory shad to the staff at Roberson and Dupree Shoe Store at 418 N Main St. wins the contest and the prize package that includes $200, custom metal artwork, traveling trophy, a card of Jimmy D Shad Rigs, Calcutta sunglasses and a $25 gift card to to Harrell’s Fishing Rod Repair Service.
To win, the first fish turned in must be a hickory shad and must be caught in the Tar River upstream from the state Parks and Wildlife boat ramp at Old Sparta. There is only one prize.
