The Southern Nash boys’ soccer team is putting together an impressive season.
The Firebirds won, 8-1, over Bunn on Monday in a Big East Conference road match. It was the Firebirds’ 16th consecutive win in 17 tries, with the lone non-victory coming against Knightdale in a 0-0 tie on Sept. 2.
Southern Nash (16-2-1 overall, 11-0 Big East) started the season with a pair of losses before embarking on this streak. During those 17 matches, Southern Nash hasn’t allowed more than two goals in any match while out-scoring opponents by a whopping 88-15.
The streak also includes seven shutouts, including four in a row where the Firebirds out-score opponents 21-0.
Against Bunn, Frank Gonzalez had two goals, while Jonny Rrobles, Izzy Leon, Kevin Dominguez, Jared Gonzalez, Raul Nunez and Gee Mendoza each added one goal. Robles and Mendoza each added a pair of assists, with Leon, Dominguez, Nunez and Ramiro Rangel tallying one assist apiece.
Southern Nash keeper Alex Benitez made three saves in the win.
The conference-leading Firebirds play at Rocky Mount High on Wednesday, before closing the regular season with two home matches next week.
The Gryphons have won three in a row, but haven’t played since Oct. 6.
Northern Nash 3 Nash Central 0
The Knights earned a shutout home win, and evened the season series with the Bulldogs.
Northern Nash (2-10) scored one goal in the first half, then added two more in the match’s final 40 minutes to end an eight-match losing streak.
Nash Central (1-9) defeated the Knights earlier in the season, but couldn’t replicate that performance on Monday as the Bulldogs’ losing skid has now reached five matches.

The Cougars (1-9-1) lost their second consecutive match.
SWE is 0-3-1 in the past four contests, including a 2-2 tie against conference rival Farmville Central that went to two overtimes.
