Nash Central is making a boys’ basketball coaching change.
The Bulldogs announced on Monday that Trey Sumler will take over as the boys’ varsity basektball coach. Former coach Renny Taylor, who spent 12 seasons guiding the program, is stepping down ahead of this winter season.
Sumler, who is currrently emplyed at UPS, will begin immediately.
Sumler graduated from Nash Central in 2009 and played football and basketball for the Bulldogs. He went on to play basketball at Western Carolina from 2010 to 2014.
He started 119 games over his four-year career and averaged 15.1 points per game.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity to coach and lead the men’s basketball program, at a place where my own basketball career developed and went to another level,” Sumler said in a press release.
Nash Central athletic director Kyle Bain added: “We would like to congratulate Coach Sumler. He embodies enthusiasm and a passion for coaching. As a Bulldog alumnus, Coach Sumler has a deep commitment to our community and a profound knowledge of the game.”
Nash Central’s last winning season came during the 2017-18 season when the Bulldogs went 16-11.
