The Rocky Mount High boys’ basketball team used a lopsided third quarter to erase a halftime deficit in a win over visiting Southern Nash on Monday.

The Gryphons won, 86-78, in what was the first game of the season for the Big East Conference rivals. Neither team played a nonconference game.

RMH (1-0, 1-0 Big East) led 20-14 after the first quarter, which featured the first mask timeout of the season. Halfway through each quarter an officials timeout is called to allow players to spend mask-free moments before returning to the court.

The second quarter saw the Firebirds (0-1, 0-1) pour in 25 points and take a 39-38 halftime lead.

But Jamal Townsend and the Gryphons turned in a strong third quarter to take the lead. Townsend scored 12 points in the quarter, and scored 22 of his game-high 28 points in the second half.

Deandre Lynch finished with 12 points, Dar’Savius Williams added 11 points for RMH, with McKenely Hines-Williams scoring 10 in the win. Also for the Gryphons, Stephon Jones scored seven points, Christian Pounds had five points and Jack Thompson made a pair of 3-pointers on his way to eight points.

Zyshone Pearce led the Firebirds with 19 points. Pearce made four 3-pointers, and scored 11 of his team’s 29 points in the fourth quarter as Southern Nash attempted to mount a comeback.

Also for the Southern Nash, four more players finished with double figures in scoring. Jackson Vick poured in 17 points, Chason Royal had 16, Jordan Vick finished with 15 points and TJ Taybron scored 11.

Landen Baker added one point.
