Tuesday’s first-round matches opened the playoff tennis tournament. Now, it picks back up this weekend.
The Faith Christian School and Rocky Mount Academy girls’ tennis teams will each play in the second round of the NCISAA 2A state tournament and will have a chance for a third head-to-head should each come away with victories.
The third-seeded Patriots will face No. 2 Trinity Academy at 2:30 p.m. on Friday Optimist Park in Raleigh. RMA, meanwhile, will play top-seeded Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill.
FCS went 7-2 this season. One of its losses came against RMA’s opponent Trinity School (6-1) in a road match on Oct. 1. The Patriots lost the match, 7-2, but performed well at the top singles spots.
The Patriots top player, Olivia Pannell won at No. 1 singles in a 6-4, 6-4 straight-set decision. At No. 3 singles, Molly Ess earned the other win. Ess won via a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 decision. The only other loss for FCS this season was a season-opening loss to Greenville Oakwood.
The winner advances to Tuesday’s semifinal round and will play the winner of RMA (6-4) and Trinity School with a state championship berth on the line.
