The N.C. Wesleyan College women’s basketball team rolled to a conference road win over Salem College on Tuesday evening, dominating the Spirits 89-70 in their USA South opener.

Junior forward Kayrisma Harrison led the offensive and defensive charge for the Bishops posting career highs in points with 24 and rebounds with 17. She helped the Bishops come out on fire in the first quarter as Wesleyan scored 27 points to take a nine-point lead into the second.

Wesleyan then held the Spirits to just 13 points in taking it 18-13 to grab a 45-31 lead into the break.

The third quarter also saw the Bishops win it 20-13 to lead 65-44 heading into the fourth. The conference foes then combined for 50 total points in the fourth quarter.

The Bishops shot 45 percent overall for the game and 73 percent from the foul line while holding Salem to just 36 percent shooting and only 22 percent from three-point range.

Sophomore forward Nadia Simmons registered a career game of 20 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Simmons shot 8 of 14 to go along with her two assists and two blocks while Harrison also added a team-high of five steals with two assists and two blocks.

Senior shooting guard Kayla Johnson also tallied a season-high of six assists with 10 points while sophomore Areina Harris scored 10 points and added two steals off the bench as well.

Sophomore guard Deonna Adams posted eight points with three steals while the Best sisters, Nyesha and Myesha, combined for nine points with Nyesha Best adding three assists.

Wesleyan improved to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the East while Salem fell to 1-4 and 0-1.

The Bishops return to action in a week when they come home to host rival William Peace at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

Monday Results

Cougar boys top Nash Central

A big first quarter (20-8) and a 28-21 edge in the second and third stanzas helped SouthWest Edgecombe’s varsity boys defeat Nash Central 70-50 Monday night in their season opener.

Xavier Mayo poured in 26 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for the Cougars, while Zyshonne Knight added 16 points and Rodney Pettaway chipped in eight points and eight rebounds.

Southern Nash’s varsity boys basketball team broke open a close game against Fike, outscoring the Demons 28-11 in the second and third quarters on their way to a 66-43 victory.

Patriots move to 3-1

Faith Christian’s varsity boys basketball team improved to 3-1 overall with a 70-52 nonconference victory over Christ Covenant (1-3 overall).
