When I first heard of the coronavirus spreading throughout the United States, I didn’t imagine it would have nearly the impact that it is having today.
Just a few months ago, I was working on a presidential campaign to defeat Donald Trump and bring new leadership back to the White House, but my candidate ended their campaign right before the stay-at-home orders were put in place.
Like many families during this crisis, our lives were completely turned upside down. I ended up having to move back home with my parents and file for unemployment like more than a million other North Carolinians have in recent months. And if I were 26 or older, I would most likely be without health care.
While no one could have foreseen this virus, Trump’s lack of leadership exacerbated the crisis here in the U.S. and now over 90,000 people have died.
Instead of listening to doctors and scientists, Donald Trump didn’t take the coronavirus threat seriously and wasted nearly two months that our country could have used to prepare for the coronavirus. Trump, Tillis and other politicians in Washington downplayed the threats this virus would have on our health and economy. In a February op-ed, Senator Burr wrote, “The United States today is better prepared than ever before to face emerging public health threats, like the coronavirus.”
The way that the current administration has responded to this crisis has been awful. From ignoring warnings within his own administration to firing staff who deal with pandemics, Trump has been badly unprepared for this crisis, and by refusing to take the coronavirus threat seriously — don’t forget he called it a “hoax” at one of his rallies — he has tragically cost American lives and hurt working North Carolina families and our state economy.
This is one of the reasons why I decided to join Organizing Together North Carolina, a statewide organizing campaign working to defeat Trump’s agenda and restore faith back into our communities and the government. Our nation deserves steady leadership and someone who will make decisions to keep our country safe.
I’m committed to being a part of that change and I hope you’ll join me.
