Lourdes Riego Marquez, 90, died peacefully in her sleep on the evening of January 6, 2021, in Cary, NC, with her family by her side. She was born in Maragundon, Cavite, Luzon in the Philippines. She graduated from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, the oldest university in Asia, earning a bachelor’s degree in music with a concentration in piano performance. She pursued specialized studies in singing and opera. Ludy, as she was affectionately called by her family and friends, lived a long and full life. She was a piano teacher for seven years before marrying family practitioner, Paterno R. Marquez, MD, a friend she had known since childhood. They traveled all over the world, but home was always where they settled to raise their three daughters. For many years, they lived in New Jersey, North Dakota, and North Carolina and Ludy was busy with sewing projects for family and friends, church activities, and volunteer work around the community. In the evenings when her girls settled down for the night, they would always hear their mom playing classical pieces on the piano to lull them to sleep. She was predeceased by her parents, Mauricia and Thomas Riego de Dios, and her siblings, Delang Abad, Clemen Riego de Dios, and Remedios Angeles. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Dr. Paterno R. Marquez; her children, Anna Marquez Cook (G.R.), Mini Marquez Hart (Mark), and Neda Marquez Roebuck (Jason); and her grandchildren, Daniel, Alexandra, Kelly, and Archer. A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 16 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish at 331 Hammond Street in Rocky Mount, NC.
