Jeannette Lambertson Smith died Monday, October 11, after a lengthy illness. She was born in Rich Square, NC on August 9, 1929 to Wingate and Grace Lambertson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years John (“Jimmy”) N. Smith, her parents, sister Grace S. Lambertson and brother Wingate A. Lambertson. She is survived by her son John Newton Smith, III and wife Rose of Winston-Salem; her daughter, Caroline Smith Raphun and husband Charles of Raleigh; her daughter Elizabeth Smith Pope and husband Gilbert of Durham; and grandchildren Tyler Smith, Maggie Smith, Grace Raphun, Ashley Pope and Sarah Pope. She received her teaching degree from Women’s College in 1951. After teaching for a year in Wilson, NC, she moved to Charlotte, NC, where she continued her career and met her husband, Jimmy. Her husband’s career path led the family to Winston-Salem and later to Rocky Mount, NC. In Rocky Mount she continued teaching at Nash Technical School and was an active member of the Lakeside Baptist Church. In retirement, she moved to Raleigh to be closer to her children and grandchildren. The family expresses their sincere appreciation for the wonderful and loving care she received from her caregiver Jean Coley and from the staff at Morningside of Raleigh Assisted Living. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Lakeside Baptist Church, 1501 Sunset Avenue, Rocky Mount, NC 27804. A private family service will follow.
