A Wilson man is dead as a result of a one-vehicle wreck on Thursday evening on Interstate 95 in the far southern part of Nash County, the State Highway Patrol said.

Ronald Tyson, 53, was driving a 2003 Saturn north on I-95 when the vehicle went to the left and off the pavement and struck a ditch, Sgt. Joe J. Scott told the Telegram in an email.

The vehicle subsequently overturned and struck a tree, Scott said.

Nash County emergency radio traffic, via the website Broadcastify, at 6:54 p.m. began alerting that there had been a motor vehicle accident on northbound I-95 at mile-marker 130.

Mile-marker 130 is in the immediate area of the N.C. 58 bridge.

The first reports coming from the emergency radio traffic said that multiple calls were coming in, that a vehicle had struck a tree and that the vehicle was smoking.

Subsequent reports said that multiple calls were coming in advising that the vehicle had flipped over and had struck a tree and that one person was believed to be trapped inside.

Tyson had been alone in the vehicle and he was pronounced dead at the scene, Scott said.
