A 14-year-old boy is dead after a recent accidental shooting in the Villa Place area in the vicinity of Rocky Mount Middle School, authorities said.

Officers responded about 6:22 p.m. on Friday to the 700 block of Hammond Street and found the teen suffering from a single gunshot wound, police Sgt. Scott Hale said in a brief news release on Wednesday afternoon.

The teen died on Sunday at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, Hale said in the news release.

Police are continuing to investigate.
