A 39-year-old man lost his life early Thursday morning in the southwestern part of the city and police are investigating the case as a homicide.

Michael Joyner appeared to have been shot, police Sgt. Scott Hale said in a brief news release provided by a City of Rocky Mount spokesman early Thursday afternoon.

A news release late Thursday morning said officers responded at 12:48 a.m. to the 100 block of Cooley Road, which is close to South Church Street.

A suspect was located at the scene and taken into custody, the first news release said.

Neither the first nor the second news release provided the name of the suspect.

Nash County Emergency Medical Services Director Scott Strufe told the Telegram that three units responded to the report of the shooting and that Joyner was pronounced dead at the scene.

Anyone with information about what happened along Cooley is asked to phone police at 252-972-1411 or Twin County Crime Stoppers at 252-977-1111.

Tips also can be texted to police at 274637 by beginning messages with RMPOL and typing up to 155 characters about the information.
