A 31-year-old Rocky Mount man got stuck twice on New Year’s Day — in the soggy back yard of a residence in rural Edgecombe County and with active arrest warrants from Pitt County.

Montrell Royale Sumlin of 1319 Branch St. was arrested after a resident in the area of Clover and Pleasant Hill roads southeast of Rocky Mount called the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office to report an unknown person stuck in a vehicle in their back yard.

Upon arrival, deputies approached the person, who turned out to be Sumlin, and began to question the reason for being in the yard.

Sumlin told deputies that he was turning around and got stuck in the yard, which was soft and soggy after heavy rains.

As deputies investigated more, it was discovered there were active warrants for his arrest out of Pitt County and Sumlin was taken into custody without incident.

He was given a $1,500 secured bond.
