Police detectives found a felony amount of marijuana and eight firearms in a house in the Oakwood area of the city after officers found a 15-year-old boy outside the residence with what would be fatal gunshot wounds.
That is what Capt. Westlyn Seabreeze, of the police department’s Criminal Investigations Division, told reporters during a news conference on Tuesday afternoon at the police department to provide an update about the shooting, which occurred on Monday night.
Three of the eight firearms were reported stolen. Two of them were reported stolen from Rocky Mount and one of them was reported stolen from Alabama, Seabreeze said.
The police department is working with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to further investigate the origin of the firearms and how the firearms ended up in the house, Seabreeze said.
Further charges are pending in connection with the finding of the drugs and the firearms, Seabreeze said.
Officers at 10:48 p.m. on Monday were in the area of Tarboro Street when they heard shots being fired and were immediately notified by ShotSpotter about an address in the 1300 block of Tarboro.
ShotSpotter is a system of sensors designed to detect, locate and alert police of gunfire in real time.
The teen, after being found at that address, was transported by ambulance to UNC Health Nash, where he died.
During the news conference on Tuesday afternoon, the Telegram asked Seabreeze whether he could say what kind of weapon or weapons were believed to have been used in the shooting.
“They were handguns,” Seabreeze said.
Citing the ongoing investigation, Seabreeze declined to answer other questions by the newspaper about whether the police department has ascertained a motive for the shooting, how many shots were fired and how many shots struck the teen and in what parts of the teen’s body.
Seabreeze said the teen’s immediate family has been notified of what happened on Monday night, but the teen’s name is not being released at this point out of respect to the teen’s family.
Seabreeze, under questioning by one reporter, did say the teen was a local resident.
Seabreeze said the police department asks that the public keep the teen’s family in their thoughts and prayers.
