Law enforcement and emergency personnel responded to a shots fired call around 5 p.m. Friday to the Walmart on Benvenue Road.
A city spokesman said in a press release that two sets of individuals, who had previous interactions, were involved in an altercation, which resulted in a shooting. The investigation is still active, but suspects have been identified, he said.
The victim of the shooting is in stable condition and has been transported to Nash UNC Health Care for treatment, the spokesman said.
Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone said in a Facebook posting that the incident was not an active shooter situation as had been reported on several social media sites.
"The Walmart area has been cordoned off and there is no active threat to the public," he said in the post.
Nash County Chief Deputy Brandon Medina was at the scene as deputies and Rocky Mount police officers were investigating vehicles as they left the parking lot at Cobb Corners.
“This is the Rocky Mount Police Department's investigation. We are just helping out. But it appears there is no danger to the public at this time,” Medina said.
Lt. R.A. Helper, a Rocky Mount officer at the scene, also confirmed it was not an active shooter situation.
“The situation is under control,” Helper said. “We will be releasing more information as it becomes available.”
