A 20-year-old man was jailed on first-degree murder charges following the Tuesday afternoon shooting of 46-year-old Donyell Powell of Tarboro.
The Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to a call about shots fired in the Pine Valley Mobile Home Park — known locally as Lakeside Mobile Home Park — on Concrete Road.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered Powell dead in a vehicle. Witnesses described three suspects that ran from the scene after the shots were fired. Responding deputies apprehended two of the suspects who were found to be carrying firearms while a third was apprehended in a nearby residence.
Detectives arrested and charged Kendrick Donte McKinney of 84 Lakeside Lane in Tarboro with first-degree murder while two juveniles were taken into custody and processed into the juvenile court system on charges of accessory after the fact.
McKinney previously was arrested for felony breaking and entering and misdemeanor breaking and entering in October 2017. He was sentenced to a period of six to 17 months in the state Department of Correction.
Powell also had a criminal background dating to 1991, including multiple drug charges as well as an assault charge.
