Education means academic achievement and much more at Rocky Mount Prep. With a mission to educate, equip and empower all scholars to excel, the school encourages a healthy blend of delivering high quality instruction, providing scholars with the necessary social and emotional support and ensuring each scholar is prepared for future success.

Educating the “whole child” is intricate, yet the school models it faithfully.

“We offer STEM instruction at every grade level for our scholars. We know that STEM is leading the way in helping our young people develop skills, think critically, and prepare for the opportunities of the future. We are consistently engaging in data analysis to understand where our scholars are academically to provide high quality instruction that will meet them where they are and close learning gaps. We are committed to helping our scholars navigate the complexities of the world and life through social-emotional learning and we are committed to supporting our families with their needs; the focus on social-emotional well-being along with academic support builds stronger scholars, supports stronger families and communities. We believe the work of educating the whole child impacts entire communities. As a regional school, we proudly don the ASCD WCN Seal, as an acknowledgement of our leadership in this important work forstudents and communities of eastern North Carolina,” Rocky Mount Prep Head of School Chaunte Garrett said.

In November 2019, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) celebrated the launch of the Whole Child Network. Since then, Rocky Mount Prep became the first school to receive the official Whole Child Network Member Seal, signifying its membership in the Whole Child Network. The initiative is aimed at helping schools implementthe whole child approach to education.

“The Whole Child Network is the next stage of our 12-year commitment to a Whole Child approach to education. It provides not only the framework, tools, and resources, to grow a Whole Child approach but also aims to establish a network of schools across the U.S. and globally who can share expertise and successes. We are delighted to have Rocky Mount Prep be the first school to receive our WCN Seal and expect them to be the first of many, many more,” said Sean Slade, ASCD senior director of global outreach.

In alignment with the Whole Child Network framework, Rocky Mount Prep is committed to ensuring that each scholar is healthy, safe, engaged, supported and challenged. To ensure students’ health, the school’s full-time registered nurse promotes healthy lifestyle and physical well-being. Child nutrition has implemented “offer versus serve” to provide healthy menu options for breakfast and lunch.

The school’s resource officer serves the school community by providing a safe learning environment. In addition, staff members have been certified in school crisis intervention strategies. Each student is actively engaged in learning through classroom coursework and outdoor learning opportunities via the greenhouses and newly installed solar panels. Scholars are able to further educational experience through partnerships with community members including the Ladies of Excellence Mentoring Program, North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network Pre-College Program and STEM Robotics initiative with Cummins Inc.

In preparation for college and career, Rocky Mount Prep scholars attend college tours throughout the year, as well as have the opportunity to take classes at Nash Community College as early as their sophomore year. The school attends the HBCU College Festival annually to increase scholars’ access to college admissions and scholarship money. The school also hasa team of counselors and anon-campus social worker to support social-emotional health and dedicated educators and tutoring services to help scholars meet personalized learning goals.
