Rocky Mount Mayor Sandy Roberson recently visited the Harrison Family YMCA.
As he walked through the facility learning about how it has been serving during the pandemic and introducing himself to children in the Learning Academy program, it was such a joy to see the big smiles on children’s faces.
Roberson and his Chief of Staff Cary Cox had a great time chatting with our kids and serving their lunches. One of the children even asked with great enthusiasm, “You mean we get to meet the mayor and get chicken nuggets?”
“One of Rocky Mount’s greatest community assets is the Harrison Family YMCA who has evolved to continue to support our city in this pandemic,” Roberson said as he toured the facility. “They’ve expanded their child care services to include students virtually attending school, as well as offering virtual workout classes, indoor pool and fitness reservations and various ball games for members to stay in shape safely.”
The YMCA staff appreciated all of the joy this visit brought to children in the Learning Academy and the opportunity to show how they are serving during the pandemic. As the YMCA winded down its Annual Giving Campaign at the end of September, it encouraged the community to support an organization that has pivoted to serve the community where it needs us most.
The YMCA has distributed over 50,000 meals to families in need, cared for almost 200 children and more.
