Ten women make Raleigh debuts

RALEIGH – Ten local young women were among 200 women from across the state presented at the 86th annual N.C. Debutante Ball sponsored by the Raleigh Terpsichorean Club.

The formal presentation at Meymandi Hall was the highlight of three days of festivities in the annual event.

Those presented were:

  • Catherine Stuart Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Cutchin Anderson of Tarboro. Her father served as her chief marshal. Sidney Wood Riddick III of Rocky Mount served as her assistant marshal.

Anderson is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison H. Williamson of Charlotte and Mr. and Mrs. Berry L. Anderson Jr. of Tarboro.

Her mother, Ashley Williamson Anderson, was presented in 1985.

Anderson also was one of 12 debutantes chosen as an assistant leader for the ball.

Anderson is a graduate of Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh and is a sophomore at N.C. State University.

  • Sallie Tillman Bailey, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. George Tillman Bailey III of Rocky Mount. Her father served as her chief marshal. Charles Stephen Plumley of Richmond, Va., served as her assistant marshal.

Bailey is the granddaughter of Mrs. J. Chalmers DaCosta Bailey of Rocky Mount and Mrs. George Tillman Bailey Jr. of Wilson and the late J. Chalmers DaCosta Bailey and the late George Tillman Bailey Jr.

Bailey’s mother, Susan Wooding Bailey Bailey, was presented in 1974. Her sister, Elizabeth Wooding Bailey, was presented in 2008. Her aunts, Sara Camden Bailey Hodges and Anne Duncan Bailey Weaver, were presented in 1981 and 1984.

Bailey is a graduate of Saint Mary’s School and is a sophomore at Virginia Commonwealth University.

  • Elizabeth McAuley Fish, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald George Fish II of Rocky Mount. Her father served as her chief marshal. Joseph Benjamin Fish of Rocky Mount served as her assistant marshal.

Fish is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Reid McAuley Jr. of Rocky Mount and Mrs. Harry Gustav Fish Jr. of Rocky Mount and the late Dr. Harry Gustav Fish.

Fish’s aunt, Janet Caroline Fish Watson, was presented in 1973. Three of her cousins also were presented, Josephine Speight Watson Thomas in 1998, Elizabeth Ambler Watson Hedgepeth in 2000 and Megan Cooper Fish in 2007.

Fish is a graduate of Rocky Mount High School and is a sophomore at East Carolina University.

  • Catherine Elizabeth Hedgepeth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Moore Hedgepeth III of Rocky Mount. Her father served as her chief marshal. William Thomas Newton of Clinton served as her assistant marshal.

Hedgepeth is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hatcher Kincheloe of Rocky Mount and the late Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Moore Hedgepeth Jr.

Hedgepeth’s mother, Elizabeth Kincheloe Hedgepeth, was presented in 1980. Her aunts, Martha Kincheloe Barnes and Susan Kincheloe Turner, were presented in 1981 and 1984.

Hedgepeth is a graduate of Rocky Mount High School and is a sophomore at High Point University.

  • Carrington Connor Herring, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bradley Jerone Herring of Rocky Mount. Her father served as her chief marshal. Alan Frederick Snyder of Wilmington served as her assistant marshal.

Herring is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerone Carson Herring of Montreat and the late Mr. and Mrs. David Marion Connor.

Herring’s mother, Kate Connor Herring, was presented in 1984.

Herring is a graduate of West Carteret High School in Morehead City and is a sophomore at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

  • Caroline Elizabeth Hunt, daughter of Drs. Amy and Richard Frederick Hunt III of Rocky Mount. Her father served as her chief marshal. Justin Michael Flowers of Rocky Mount served as her assistant marshal.

Hunt is the granddaughter of Charlotte Cornell Wheeler of Vero Beach, Fla., the late Herbert Bruce Wheeler and the late Dr. and Mrs. Richard Frederick Hunt Jr .

Her aunt, Kathryn Hunt Phippen, was presented in 1978.

Hunt is a graduate of Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh and is a sophomore at Meredith College.

  • Caroline Lazette Nelson, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James Gregory Nelson of Rocky Mount. Her father served as her chief marshal. Mark Howard Eatman of Rocky Mount served as her assistant marshal.

Nelson is the granddaughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Guy Deyton of Greenville and the late Mr. and Mrs. James Edward Nelson of Ayden.

Nelson’s mother, Nancy Deyton Nelson, was presented in 1975. Four of her aunts also were presented, Melinda Deyton Fox in 1973, Cassie Deyton Causey in 1976, Grayson Deyton Massey in 1977 and Kara Deyton Waters in 1986.

Nelson is a graduate of Rocky Mount High School and is a sophomore at N.C. State University.

  • Mary Elizabeth Roberson, daughter of Frances Downey Roberson and Carrol Saunders Roberson Jr. of Rocky Mount. Her father served as her chief marshal. Alexander Pahl Blackwelder of Boone served as her assistant marshal.

Roberson is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wolfgang Karl Joklik of Durham and Mr. and Mrs. Max Dixon of Rocky Mount and the late Carrol Saunders Roberson.

Roberson’s mother, Frances Hunter Downey Roberson, was presented in 1984.

Roberson graduated from the Fletcher Academy in Raleigh and is a sophomore at Presbyterian College.

  • Patricia Judith Roberson, daughter of Frances Downey Roberson and Carrol Saunders Roberson Jr. of Rocky Mount. Her father served as her chief marshal. William August Mahler Thorp of Rocky Mount served as her assistant marshal.

Roberson is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wolfgang Karl Joklik of Durham and Mr. and Mrs. Max Dixon of Rocky Mount and the late Carrol Saunders Roberson.

Her mother, Frances Hunter Downey Roberson, was presented in 1984.

Roberson is a graduate of Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Va., and is a sophomore at the College of Charleston.

  • Anne Warwick Steed, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Warwick Steed III of Rocky Mount. Her father served as her chief marshal. Robert Kincheloe Barnes of Rocky Mount served as her assistant marshal.

Steed is the granddaughter of Mrs. Thomas Warwick Steed Jr. of Raleigh and the late Thomas Warwick Steed Jr. and the late Dr. and Mrs. Simeon Huey Adams.

Steed’s mother, Elizabeth Adams Steed, was presented in 1978. Her sisters, Elizabeth Paton Steed and Eliza Davidson Steed, were presented in 2007 and 2009. Her grandmother, Karen Crawford Adams, was presented in 1953. Her great-grandmother, Emily Pollock Crawford, was presented in 1927.

Steed is a graduate of Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh and is a sophomore at N.C. State University.

The Terpsichorean Club, comprised of men from the Raleigh area, was formed in the 1920s to sponsor an annual statewide debutante ball. The event has been held yearly since 1923 with the exception of the World War II years.

Young women are selected for presentation by more than 200 nominators statewide, and approval of the nominations is made by club members. The women are selected based on the contributions their families have made to the economic, cultural, social and civic life of the state.

During the ball weekend, eight functions were held to honor the debutantes and their families and their escorts.

Thomas Grantham Fisher Jr. chaired this year’s ball.
