Two suspected opiate traffickers were jailed Friday following an undercover drug deal and a short chase that ended when the suspects rammed a patrol car.
Authorities said Edgecombe County deputies and Tarboro officers bought opiate pills from James Roger Hedgepeth and Casey Grey Robbins then attempted to arrest the men. Robbins reportedly took off in a vehicle — nearly running over an officer in the process — and leading police through the Riverside Plaza in Tarboro before ramming a patrol car on Howard Avenue. After the wreck, both suspects were taken into custody without further incident.
Hedgepeth, 23, of Pinetops was charged with three counts of trafficking opiates. Robbins, 24, of Elm City, was charged with three counts of trafficking opiates, injury to property, flee to elude arrest, reckless driving to endanger and assault with a deadly weapon on a government official. Both were jailed in Edgecombe County under $50,000 secured bonds.
