GRILLO: College football full of thrills in 2011-12 season

With the BCS Championship Game just hours away, it’s time to take a look back on the most recent season of the greatest game in the world, college football.

I don’t think anyone around here entertained any doubts that Russell Wilson, upon leaving N.C. State, would be brilliant with Wisconsin.

Perhaps only back-to-back last-minute losses kept him from winning the Heisman.

College football’s most coveted award went to Baylor’s Robert Griffin III, who reminded me of Cam Newton, only faster on his feet and more accurate with his arm.

Baylor scored 52 points or more nine times and never fewer than 24 points.

Before the Alamo Bowl, Griffin’s teammate, Terrance Ganaway, not listed as a starter at the beginning of the season, was projected as a second-day draft pick. He picked the perfect opportunity to explode for five touchdowns against Washington and is likely now to be selected on day one.

Locally, Tom O’Brien and N.C. State had us going through multiple anxieties, losing when it shouldn’t and winning when it seemed practically out of the question.

It’s a strange phenomena, particularly in the ACC, where it deicded the fate of Chan Gailey when he was at Georgia Tech and now bedevils Clemson’s Dabo Swinney.

That’s usually described by the color commentator as “losing focus.”

Want a perfect illustration of losing focus? New UNC coach Larry Fedora won 11 games at Southern Mississippi, but the Eagles lost to Marshall early in the season and to UAB near the end.

I, for one, was astonished with how well North Carolina played over the past two seasons despite horrendous distractions, but to be decimated by Missouri in the Independence Bowl was shocking.

Every great player will have an off day, and it was that day for the Heels’ mercurial Giovani Bernard.

Nice gesture by the Heels to send interim coach Everett Withers out on a positive note.

Duke coach David Cutcliffe keeps mentioning a bowl game for his team at the start of each season.

But as long as the Blue Devils play an 11- or 12-game schedule, they don’t seem destined to ever win more than five games.

The Dominique Davis era at East Carolina is history.

Coach Ruffin McNeill is off to a good start in 2012, landing prized defensive back Lucas Thompson via an announcement at the Under Armour All-America game.

The only military organization not sponsoring a H.S. all-star game this year was the Appalachian State R.O.T.C.

But there’s always next year.
