AREA GOLF: Father-son duo has Northgreen back on track

Northgreen Country Club nearly fell apart a little less than five years ago.

Patchy greens, scorched fairways and weeds took over the course.

New owner Wayne Holloman, along with his father, have changed that in three and a half years.

Northgreen Country Club is back on pace to become what it once was — a championship golf course that played host to the ACC Championship in past years.

“We’re well beyond where we expected to be,” Holloman said in a telephone conversation. “We knew it would take three to four years of hard work to hopefully reach that point. People appreciate what they see and keep coming back.”

Holloman said the ability to put a lot of money, time and hard work into the course is what has led to its rejuvenation.

“The layout and golf course speaks for itself,” Holloman said. “We’ve been out here a many of days sun up to sun down to work that extra mile, save that money and put the course back to the greater good. The people are taking notice.”

Northgreen will play host to several tournaments, including its club championship and some smaller business tournaments, in the next month.

“We still have seven or eight tournaments to run before winter,” Holloman said. “We have a busy slate.”

TARBORO NATIVE HITS HOLE-IN-ONE

Kenny Honeycutt played golf for more than 20 years and had never hit a hole-in-one.

“I was beginning to think it would never happened,” Honeycutt said.

One shot changed his luck.

Honeycutt hit a 6-iron on the 140-yard par 3 third hole at The Links at Cotton Valley on Sept. 6.

“I lost the ball into the glare and thought it was short,” Honeycutt said. “As my playing partner and I rode down the hill, the group in front of us was giving me thumbs up. I knew then I had finally hit one.”
