Even when Post 58 found itself only down by two runs going into the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday night, they knew the game was far from over. After left fielder, Luke Mills, singled to right field to tie the game, Linwood Jones came up to the plate. Jones, who had struggled to find the sweet spot on the bat, had one thing on his mind.

“I just had to put the ball in play and get this run in anyway possible,” Jones said.

That’s just what he did.

Jones laced a single into right center to score Chase Roupp to give Post 58 a 10-9 victory against Cary Post 67 in the first round of the Area 1 playoffs.

“We stayed behind from about the fourth inning on,” Post 58 coach Hank Jones said. “We’d get within one every inning and couldn’t get that big hit. But they just stayed in the game and won it.”

With Post 58’s victory, they will move on to face Raleigh Post 1 in the Area 1 West Semifinals, which start Monday at Legion Field. Jones feels that his team is going to be ready for Monday.

“I think we will play well,” said Jones. “We’re slam out of pitching. I don’t have a clue what we’ll do Monday.”

With an offense that scored 36 runs in the series against Cary and limited pitching, Post 58 will have to play their best ball in the series against a tough and well-rested Raleigh team.

“We’re just going to have to figure it out,” said Jones. “Somebody’s going to be on the mound Monday.”
