When you take a look back at the games Post 58 has played this postseason, they have been as crazy as you can get for a baseball game.
That didn’t change at all Wednesday at Legion Field.
After taking a 7-1 lead into the bottom of the 7th, Post 58 saw it vanish as Raleigh Post 1 put up six runs during the next two innings to tie the game.
In the ninth innning, Post 58 and Post 1 both put up a one on the scoreboard and sent the ballgame into extras.
Both teams went scoreless in the 10th inning and when the 11th inning rolled around, Post 58 had finally had enough.
David Williams started off with a single, which was followed by two errors to load up the bases for Post 58.
Following a fielder’s choice and a pop out to short, in stepped Blake Helms with two outs and the bases loaded.
Helms knew it was his time to step up. and that’s what he did.
Helms laced a single into right field, which allowed Griffin Parker to score and give Post 58 the lead.
In the bottom of the 11th, Helms sat Post 1 down and sealed it for Post 58 to give them a 9-8 victory against Raleigh Post 1, in game three of the Area 1 semifinals best-of-five series.
“I’ve got confidence in him doing that job, even though things didn’t work out (Tuesday),” Post 58 coach Hank Jones said. “He’ll get a chance to close (tonight) if we have the chance to win.”
With the victory in game three, Post 58 is still alive in postseason play and will face Raleigh Post 1 again at 7 tonight, at Legion Field. The past two games have been decided by one run. Having used four pitchers on Wednesday and with the possibility of two games remaining in the series, Jones said he’s going to use a lot of them.
“That’s all we got,” Jones said. “I think they (Post 1) are in the same boat too ... I don’t know who’s going to pitch, but it will be a lot of them.”
