Southern Nash rebounded to challenge Southern Durham on Monday, but its originial deficit was too much to overcome.
The 21st-seeded Firebirds lost, 72-62, to No. 13 seed Southern Durham in the NCHSAA 3-A first round.
The Firebirds allowed the first 13 points of the game and trailed by 17 at half, but they cut the lead to four with less than three minutes to play. They couldn’t come any closer.
Bryan Vines led the Firebirds with 15 points, and Marquise Wright had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
I don’t know if it was because it was a lot of our guys’ first game in the playoffs, but they just hit us in the beginning,” Southern Nash coach Robbie Kennedy said. “We outplayed them in the second half, but we dug too big of a hole.”
No. 5 Tarboro advanced to the second round of the 1-A girls’ playoffs with a 53-51 victory against No. 12 Manteo.
Last year’s 1-A runner-up, Rocky Mount Prep, did not survive the first round this season. The No. 16 seed Jaguars lost to first-seeded East Carteret, 91-52.
