Nash County’s U-14 Babe Ruth All-Star team has completed a repeat.
The U-14’s finished a perfect 5-0 run Tuesday evening in Kinston to finish as the state’s Eastern Division champions for a second straight season.
Nash County will play in the Southeast Regional tournament beginning Wednesday.
“They all play well together,” Nash County coach Lee Gold said. “Now that they have played together for two years, they have gelled really good. They know what they have to do and go do it.”
Nash County outscored their state tournament opponents, 41-13, with the closest contest being decided by one run.
Gold said the team played well offensively and defensively to avoid any poor outings.
There are a few new additions to the team, but most of the players are returners from the squad which advanced to the Southeast Regional in Union City, Tenn. last season.
That squad finished as the tournament’s runner-up.
“I believe our team is better, stronger, older and a little wiser,” Gold said. “They know what they have to do to finish it out.”
This year’s Southeast Regional could last as long as a week, and to make travel expenses possible, the squad is seeking donations from local people and businesses.
Although the regional will be held within the state, hotel stays and meals will need to be covered.
Last season, the squad made a long-distance trip possible with the help of a fundraiser and donations from local businesses.
Those wishing to donate to the U-14’s efforts can mail checks to: Nash County Babe Ruth Baseball, 1512 West Hills Dr., Tarboro, N.C. 27886.
“This is a once in a lifetime thing,” Gold said. “Fortunately, we’re doing it again.”
