Nash Central freshman Jenn Jackson spent most of the season setting and re-setting records, ultimately undoing 11 Big East Conference records and two school records.
She departed the Harrison Family YMCA on Thursday without any new low marks but with four gold medals around her neck.
Jackson and senior teammate Lindsey Sharpe, who was named Big East Conference Girls’ Swimmer of the Year, each won four events as the Nash Central girls’ swim team won the Big East Conference Championship for the third straight season, completing its second consecutive undefeated year.
“The whole team came together,” Jackson said. “It’s something we can celebrate as one. It’s not just me doing it. It’s all of us.”
Wilson Hunt’s boys’ team also won, edging out Wilson Fike for its third straight title.
Before the meet, Nash Central coach Margaret Godwin challenged Sharpe.
Godwin rarely nominates a swimmer for a Swimmer of the Year award, but she nominated Sharpe. Godwin told Sharpe, one of five seniors who will graduate with three titles, to put on a show.
“She did it,” Godwin said.
Sharpe swam faster than ever in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.
Then she did it again as a part of her freestyle relay teams.
“When she told me what she did, it kind of made me want to do my best,” Sharpe said. “... Honestly, I have no idea where it came from.”
Seniors Randi Price and Neill Bunn each won three events Thursday night. Lizzie Eakin won twice, and Jessica Savage scored points in the 100 breaststroke.
“I knew we had some good girls left over from last year,” Godwin said. “I was hoping we could continue the winning streak. We’ve lost one meet in three years. ... They’re a great group. I’m really going to miss them.”
Nash Central won all but two events Thursday and finished with 234 points. Rocky Mount High was second with 190 points.
“It felt really good because we’ve always been working for a conference championship,” Price said. “This is the third year that we’ve gotten it. ... We didn’t want to ruin that or let anyone down.”
On a night when the expected happened, Nash Central and Wilson Hunt walking away with titles, there were some positive surprises throughout the meet.
Max Whitwell (Northern Nash) dropped 10 seconds off his 500 free, and Southern Nash’s John Lynn finished first in the 50 free and 100 free. Southern Nash’s 400 free relay dropped seven seconds, putting the Firebirds in position to make regionals.
Rocky Mount boys’ 200 medley relay dropped five seconds after swapping swimmers and the order.
