Rocky Mount High won the NEW 6 Conference Wachovia Cup after championships in boys' and girls' track & field, and a tie for first in baseball.
"It is a great honor, of course," Rocky Mount High athletics director Mike Gainey said. "Dropping from 4-A to 3-A, we thought it would be an easier trip than this. But (Wilson) Fike has kept us on our toes."
The school won 11 conference championships during the 2007-08 academic year. That is believed to be a single-year school record. Rocky Mount finished behind Wilson Fike during the first two years of the NEW 6 Conference.
The Wachovia Conference Cup, sponsored annually by Wachovia Bank and sanctioned by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, recognizes high school sports programs that achieve the best overall performance within their respective athletic conferences. Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.
Wilson Fike followed in second place with championships in boys' golf and soccer and with a tie for first in baseball. Final conference standings: Rocky Mount High 174, Wilson Fike 166.5, Nash Central 162.5, Northern Nash 154, Southern Nash 142.5 and SouthWest Edgecombe 118.5.
In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play.
Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.
