The rites of Twin Counties Football

Eleven years ago, last state crown flowed in,

And since back then, teams all around here did win.

FIRST PRACTICES: TODAY | JAMBOREES: AUG. 15 | FIRST GAMES: AUG. 22

But none's come out on top again,

Some were oh so close, but never number one.

What will it take? What will it take to win it all?

Here comes the story of the Edgecombe and Nash,

Counties twin, a champ'nship they cannot hash.

Not since North Edgecombe under Cobb

Good 'ball so long – oh, now don't it seem so odd?

What will it take? What will it take to win it all?

Let's start downtown now with old Rocky Mount High,

So many wins last season, oh so alive.

But in the end, 'nother tough loss,

A big, bad team way out west, that was the cost.

Now can the Gryphons win the big one for Holt?

Or maybe, maybe, what about the Bulldogs?

New coach, new stars, but they have a winning log.

Third round last season, remember?

Losing Grantham don't throw 'em in the embers.

For now, Crudup wants the ol' triple option.

And, please, don't start to go and count out the Knights,

Just one win last year, but they have lots of fight.

The young Chad Smith, he has a plan,

Give him time, fans, and he might just be the man.

Oh, not a crown now, but they might win more games.

Down south, the Firebirds, they are building again,

Car'lina strong, those boys are foll'wing the plan.

Just run and run and, well, run s'more,

Play good D, too, you'll be winning like before.

Oh-seven, who knows, maybe just a down year.

Here comes the story of the Edgecombe and Nash,

Counties twin, a champ'nship they cannot hash.

Not since North Edgecombe under Cobb

Good 'ball so long – oh, now don't it seem so odd?

What will it take? What will it take to win it all?

With Craddock at the helm, Vikes again look strong,

With plenty of speed, too, they do little wrong.

Diff'rent conference, lots of punch,

Just don't expect trash talk, they don't do that much.

Can an Eastern Plains crown be in the future?

Ward has two rings, oh, yes, both with North Edgecombe,

Lots of jobs with a program he all but owns.

The man is rebuilding the name,

And all the fame that arrives with a good game.

The Warriors might jump again in oh-eight.

Then there's Mac Allen, a true veteran coach,

He has more wins than a lot, more wins than most.

Only eight Eagles, s'all they need,

The team guns, then runs, then occasional feeds.

So much talent there, they just might be the ones.

But all conversations must end with the man

Who builds big-time programs, has plenty of fans.

Give Cobb his credit, give him his due,

A legend in Edgecombe, a wizard in blue.

With him on the sideline, the Cougars can win.

Here comes the story of the Edgecombe and Nash,

Counties twin, a champ'nship they cannot hash.

Not since North Edgecombe under Cobb

Good 'ball so long – oh, now don't it seem so odd?

What will it take? What will it take to win it all?
