Coach Jeff Filkovski’s N.C. Wesleyan football squad was selected to finish seventh out of nine teams during the USA South Football Media Day held this week at Maryville College in Tennessee.
N.C. Wesleyan finished 2-8 in Filkovski’s first season.
The Battling Bishops return 60 players from last season’s squad, incuding first-team all-conference running back Jacques Alston and first-team all-conference defensive back Travonne Marshall, a Tarboro High School graduate who led his unit in tackles (49) and interceptions (3) last season.
“It’s a great time to be at North Carolina Wesleyan College,” Filkovski said. “Moving into my second year, I’m very excited about some of the things we should be able to do offensively. We’re still young defensively, but I’m pleased with how our players have developed in the offseason. The character of our football team will lie in the offensive and defensive lines.”
Maryville, which won the USAS title last season, was chosen again to take the crown, followed by Christopher Newport and Methodist.
N.C. Wesleyan opens the season Sept. 6 against Stevenson in a nonconference matchup. The 7 p.m. kickoff at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex will be the first night game in school history.
