    The Pro Football Hall of Fame is richer by seven new members, including San Francisco 49ers splendid wide receiver Jerry Rice, the Cowboys one-man infantry, Emmitt Smith and one-time Broncos great, running back Floyd Little.

    How stupendous was Rice? Well, once when I spoke with Steve Sabol of NFL Films, he said he thought Rice was the greatest player in NFL history.

    Northern Nash shooting guard Essence Henderson walked toward her bench with a look of shock at the conclusion of the fourth quarter Tuesday night.

    Henderson wasn’t surprised by the result, but at how the score had become tied in the first place.

    CHARLOTTE — Snubbed by the Carolina Panthers since the end of the season, the agent for five-time Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers is convinced his client will play elsewhere in 2010.

    Carl Carey said Sunday night the Panthers have “not made a single inquiry this offseason” regarding the impending unrestricted free agent.

    I ran into an old friend last Friday. It was the first warm day after the big freeze that so effectively locked most everything up with ice.

    “Why in the world aren’t you quail hunting on such a beautiful day?” I asked. He shook his head and replied very softly, “There just aren’t enough birds left to hunt anymore.”
