Arsenic in rice partly from poultry fertilizer and runoff

I'm so frustrated with our county commissioners giving Sanderson incentives to come in and spoil our environment and my own coming to the sobering realization that the common citizen has no voice. Then I read this alert on ABC News today. The previous commenter wrote that this is the end to good water. Go to this link and read the 2nd page. Very scary indeed that the poulty industry just last year (ha!) stopped feeding its chicken arsenic to spur growth. This makes me sick - and, sadly, it really may do just that.

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/arsenic-rice-report-finds-worrisome-levels/...

Read at close of article that Consumer Report outright disputes that arsenic if no longer being used: "If the Chicken industry's current stance is that arsenic containing drugs are not required to grow chickens for meat, then they should be more than willing to support our position on a complete ban on the use of arsenical drugs in poultry production."

Nash County residents, wake up!!!

chicken plant

we have to vote them out of office in the next election. That is the end to good water.

very well put, mister re: suits

I laugh and loved the real americans versus 'suits' comments. so true. real america sat on the left. the business 'suits' sat on the right side. but they were small in numbers. very few 'citizens'.. and boy, once they talked.. they got out of there.. at least 'real america' and 'real nash county' stayed. the commissioners voting 'for' just made another opportunity.. photo op. for andre knight of rocky mount to use in his future election campaigns... ruining rocky mount.. now trying to ruin nash county... hats off to southern nash people for sticking in there... con ward put much effort in.. i wish his efforts could be rewarded with some tangible results.. if not.. how about a 'victory' rally in southern nash county anyway..?? I'd like that.. we may have lost that vote.. but we won on integrity and being true working class americans. still think sanderson should be located directly across from robbie davis' red oak property at dortches.

Taxation Without Representation

The voters of Nash County need to know just what happened at the incentive hearing for Sanderson Farms. First of all, we heard that Sanderson Farms would be paying for their own infrastructure. Why? If they do not apply for state and local grants, they will not be required to do an environmental impact study. They can get by with fewer regulations on what they do. Mr. Belfield stated that he was concerned about that. Then, one of the suits stood up and stated they would still have to get permits, which satisfied Mr. Belfield enough to second the motion to approve the incentives. Next, Eddie Williamson read a copy of a letter to Nash County from the City of Wilson offering to buy the land (our $1.2 million plant site) for $1.5 million and help develop a more responsible company on the site. Mr. Outlaw quickly spoke up and put it in the record that he had never seen the letter. How could he? The only Nash County commissioners privy to the mediation were Robbie Davis and Fred Belfield. The other commissioners could not even sit in the room. Mr. Billy Morgan, the chairman of the board, was not even invited to the mediation! The Nash County Landowners have attended almost every meeting for two years. We have tried to communicate with each other and get the word out. We were glad to see others involved and speaking Monday night, but as we observed, all our efforts, our research, our speeches, radio and TV appearances, and our calls fell on the deaf ears of five commissioners, but much appreciation goes to Wayne Outlaw, District 5 and Billy Morgan, District 3 for encouraging us and standing up for us. You are both heroes because you had the courage to stand up for what was right.

Nash County Needs New Leadership!

The "Slaughterhouse Five" showed their true colors last night. Belfield said he would be concerned if Sanderson was evading a full environmental study, by agreeing to pay for the infrastructure to the plant and asking for no State incentives. Of course, I'm sure the fact that Nash will pay incentives for 15 years instead of 10 will be a backdoor way to pay Sanderson back. Did he delay the vote to find out? No, he was the one to second Danny Tyson's motion to vote for the incentive package. Commissioner Wayne Outlaw's motion to delay the vote until the Wilson offer was discussed and to find out if FTE meant full time equivalent (which could mean 2 p/t employees instead of 1 full time) that was in Sanderson's agreement to bring 1100 FTE's. was turned down quickly by all but Billy Morgan.

Until Nash County can get new leadership and get rid of Robbie Davis, Mary Wells, Lou Richardson, and Fred Belfield, it's a lost cause. They are too controlled by the "Good Ole Boys" in Rocky Mount and business goes on as usual. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours mentality. Not what's best for the County! At least, we will soon be rid of Danny Tyson.

God bless Wayne Outlaw and Billy Morgan for standing up for the citizens in the County.

Keep em in the dark, RMT...

I don't blame you. I wouldn't want to tell Nash County citizens that during the hearing an offer from Wilson was read in public record stating they would buy the plant property from Nash for 1.5 million dollars, run industry capable infrastructure including sewer to the intersection at their expense for 3 million dollars, and make joint development of the 95/97 corridor a priority. Nash County taxpayers would save millions.

Nash's leadership turned Wilson's offer down. Flat. No discussion.

AND 4 OF THE COMMISSIONERS SAID THEY HAD NEVER EVEN HEARD OF THE OFFER!!!!

And yet 2 of the 4 still voted for a chicken plant.

Incredible.

5 Rotten Commissioners

Chicken houses can be 50 feet, that is about 5 car lengths, close to your house or the water you drink....The 5 commissioners who voted for this atrocity should be tarred and feathered. They took away all the regulations, rezoned the land and have now have donated taxpayer paid land to Sanderson Farms...and a 40% reduction on the taxes...very nice. If they had only put that towards education and teachers, training for their unemployed it would have been better spent. In five years from now, the pro job bunch will be bitching about higher taxes and the stench in the air. Hope you remember who fought for your environment.

true

true. shame they can't reconsider and put it at the Dortches exit right across street from Robbie Davis' house/ i am sure the red oak people would love it. hearing some of the people speak last night, yes there is an elment of business discrimination against the old, elderly and those least able to afford new homes elsewhere. Andre Knight? like one lady said last night.. he should be ashamed as NAACP president for rocky mount turning his back on black people in the area. at very least, the black community should get a new naacp leader or just kick his stupd butt to the curb.

choice words

public comment. you had overwhelming number of people against with a small number of corporate suits for. not many 'citizens' there in support. that short little black idion on the commissioner board: ranted and raved about that kenneth pledger,.. kennethpledger fellow.. who does he think he is talking racism in this meeting... and Pledger? well pledger just spoke abount councilman andre night who had just injected racism into the meeting thru his comments and quickly ran out the door of the meeting... Pledger also commented that it was not the nash county commissioners who ruined rocky mount.. it was the majority city council and one before it that ruined rocky mount... now beelfelld, the commissioner... had just ten minutes earlier admonished the crowd for making negative comments and sounds after someone would speak.. and that the meeting should be closed down if they continued... Two other people... mentioned Andre Knights' name and opposiiton to him.. Belfeeld didn't say anything at all about that.. reverse racism needs to be dealt with and thrown to pasture... including Belfield and Knight.. belfield.. what a joke--go have lunch with Andre. Southern Nash? keep it up.

5 Commissioners

That 5 commissioners would pass this incentive package for 138 million pounds of chicken crap a year with nothing in place to protect the taxpaying public for 1100 jobs is ludicrous!!!!!!!!!! For all that comment FOR this atrocity, they can build chicken houses 50 feet from your water source and also your home! The opposition is not done, there is still a court case pending. We are trying to protect eastern North Carolina. God bless the two commissioners who have stood their ground and actually looked at the information and the true cost of these jobs to our region.
