Rocky Mount police seized a revolver from an elderly Tarboro man Tuesday night during a traffic stop.
Authorities said officers stopped a vehicle on the 1300 block of North Church Street after receiving a report that the vehicle had been involved in a collision. Police said that when officers approached the driver, they saw a loaded .44-caliber revolver on the floorboard of the vehicle. The serial number was filed off the weapon, police said. Reports of the vehicle being in a collision were unfounded.
The driver, Willie Raphael Matthewson Jr., 72, was charged with felony possession of a weapon with an altered serial number. He was jailed in Nash County under a $2,000 secured bond.
