Rocky Mount police are searching for a man after his efforts to steal more than $500 in meat from a grocery store were thwarted by a loss prevention officer.

Authorities said an employee at Harris Teeter on Sunset Avenue called police around 1 p.m. Monday about a man who loaded a shopping cart with food and walked out the door without paying. The employee reportedly confronted the man, who abandoned the cart, ran and jumped in a car then fled the scene. Police recovered the food along with a checkbook from a customer in the store.

The suspect is described as a 5-foot-10 to 6-foot tall black man with dark skin, a heavy build weighing between 210 and 240 pounds, wearing a dark-colored baseball cap, gray UNC hooded sweatshirt and dark pants. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 977-1111 or crimestoppers@rockymountnc.gov.
