Rocky Mount police charged a 40-year-old man with first-degree murder Friday in connection with an early morning shooting that killed a man.
Demitures Lee Ellis was charged with first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, discharging a firearm in the city limits and driving while license revoked. He was jailed in Edgecombe County with no bond.
Authorities said two men were in a 2001 Cadillac Deville when they were shot at by a gunman in a Dodge Durango. Johnelle Earl Robinson, 31, was wounded in the gunfire and fled with a 30-year-old man to a gas station for help. Police said the men drove off but got into a car crash before getting to the hospital.
Robinson was taken to Nash General Hospital and transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where he later died.
Police arrested Ellis later Friday afternoon but said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges might be forthcoming.
This is the second homicide of the year in Rocky Mount.
Police also responded to two unrelated shootings Thursday night on the 400 block of Arrington Avenue and 1600 block of Davis Street. No one was injured in those incidents and no suspect description was released.
Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 977-1111 or crimestoppers@rockymountnc.gov.
