Police investigate similar cigarette thefts

Authorities are investigating whether two reported thefts of cigarettes at convenience stores on Benvenue Road are related.

The first incident happened around 8:40 p.m. Saturday at the EP Mart on the 1800 block where a clerk reported a man had grabbed five cartons of Newports cigarettes and ran from the store. The suspect is described as a 5-foot-7 white man between the ages of 20 and 25, weighing about 150 pounds with blonde hair.

A similar incident happened shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday at the Grab N Go on the 1500 block where a clerk reported a suspect wearing a white shirt and khakis grabbed four cartons of Newport cigarettes and ran from the store. The suspect in the second case is described as a 5-foot-4 to 5-foot-5 white man, between the ages of 18 and 22, weighing between 140 and 150 pounds with light-colored hair.
