Rocky Mount police arrested a man Sunday morning in connection with a 1997 assault.

Tyrone Jermaine Harris, 37, was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Harris was issued a $15,000 unsecured bond.

Rocky Mount police Cpl. Mike Lewis said officers responded around 5 p.m. on April 13, 1997, to an assault on the 1100 block of Branch Street. Authorities said a 37-year-old man had multiple fractures to his face from a suspect with a metal weapon. The victim was treated and released.

Police obtained warrants on a suspect, but the suspect could not be found and no arrest was made.

“The victim came forward with new information recently and we reopened the case,” Lewis said.

Authorities said the suspect used a fraudulent name at the time of the assault and officers had to determine the suspect’s legal name before filing the charges again.
