Edgecombe County authorities are warning residents about a telephone scam that is targeting elderly residents.

According to a press release, telemarketers have called local residents, telling them that they represent Senior Safety Alert, Senior Emergency Care or Senior Safe Alert and claiming to sell personal emergency alarm systems. The company offers to install the system free and bill $30 a month for service, but when the telemarketer collects the resident’s credit card and other identifying information, they use them for identity theft purposes.

Concerns should be reported to the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office at 641-7911 or the Edgecombe County Office on Aging at 641-5831.
