Rocky Mount police investigating a possible assault discovered there was more to the story Thursday morning after discovering a break-in at a vacant residence on the 100 block of Wye Drive.

According to police reports, an officer responded to the intersection of Washington and Dunn streets around 3:30 a.m. Thursday and found Brian Taylor, 22, with a severe cut to his left arm. Taylor allegedly told police he had been assaulted — but after further investigation, officers noticed evidence of the break-in.

Reports indicate Taylor was injured when he allegedly broke a rear window of the residence and then attempted to walk home, but passed out.

Taylor was transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. A warrant for misdemeanor breaking and entering and filing a false police report will be served on Taylor once he is released from the hospital.
