NASHVILLE – An associate professor from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill warned Nash County commissioners about a variety of public health concerns that he said could affect workers and the community if a Sanderson Farms poultry plant locates in the county.

motive?
ulterior motives? yet bet. it's always about money--who can make money off the deal... maybe this thing should be put up to a vote by only people living in the southern nash area??? otherwise.. make the i 95 parcels near the chairman's house an option... let southern nash people vote to put it there. giving them land PLUS incentives is too much. maybe it's good, maybe it's not.. but the oppositon people have every right to speak up.. and should.
other motivations
someone else hinted at another motivation during the meeting, but here is the real take on it: Sanderson has some plants that are unionized, they are trying to get rid of workers in those plants by coming to rocky mount to do the same things. at the same time (2011) Townsend of Siler City/Morrisville went out of business and Pilgrim closed a plant in Texas. it's more about union busting and sending an undesireable enterprise to nash county. got to ask this question: are the rocky mount democratic/black people giving robbie davis 'campaign donations' or what? they seem to be on his team and he on theirs .. not typical of conservative repubicans. just give up... but, relocate it to the dortches I 95 interchange.. right across from robbie's house. it will be built and run right.

Civil questions. I'll try to provide civil answers.
Dr. Wing is a Professor of Epidemiology. That's a far shot beyond a pig expert. Check his qualifications at UNC's website.
As a matter of fact, yes, I do suspect some board members have ulterior motives for their support of this industry.
I'll go you one better. Find me ANY bonafide environmental expert that says locating a poultry plant on one protected watershed and setting up a waste spray field on another protected watershed and adding 500 chicken houses to 2 rivers that are both already EPA rated class 5 nutrient overloaded is a good idea and I'm on board.
The motivations of the opposition are quite clear. I can't speak for the proponents.
So many time our words have fallen on deaf ears. Chastising individuals in a public format is never the best option for conflict resolution, however now it seems to be the only one we have that gets their attention. Not a good answer but the best one I've got.
Your next observation is one we can agree on. Without a doubt, the majority of the board made their minds up nearly 2 years ago as was demonstrated when they contract zoned the Williams property for Sanderson and probably nothing short of legal intervention is going to change it, however we have to try.
I have been a tax paying citizen of Nash County for many years. My home is within a few hundred yards of the hatchery site. The commissioners supporting this project demonstrated they had no regard for my family's well being, property values or way of life when they plopped this industry in my front yard. They'll get no respect from me.
Thank you
What do you suspect are the ulterior motives of the commissioners? Do you have any basis in fact for your suspicions?
Honestly, if every expert said that the business is OK, would you support it?
My comments about a hog specialist reflect his answers were based on what happens in a hog operation. Are there not statistics regarding chicken operations?
You have begun the process of reaching the truth, tell the truth regarding oposition to the project.
Questionable ethics and the appearance of impropriety...
If I had any hard evidence of illegal activities they would already have been made public, so the answer is no I do not. However in this case as in most others, just follow the money.
LOL well in my earlier post I stated if you could find ANY bonafide environmental expert that would bless this mess I was on board, so I've nowhere to hide from that one. However, I think my position on the issue is pretty safe.
Probably the best source of information pertaining to the long term effects of poultry production are based on data collected in and around the Chesapeake Bay and Delmarva peninsula. I posted a link to one such investigative report in the other RMT poultry feature.
Reasons for project opposition are as varied as the parties involved. Each entity from the City of Raleigh to lil ole me has it's own agenda. Some overlap, some are parallel and others, well they're just over there in right field somewhere. However, as the old Chinese proverb goes, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
One more thing
Follow the money............... Where do you see it leading? What evidence to you have?
Thanks for the civil discussion, this is what is needed. God Bless you!
Fairness
Why did they send a pig expert to comment on a chicken operation?
Is it suspected that the county commissioners have some personal reason for trying to bring jobs to the county that is sinister?
Had the expert recommended Sanderson, would any of you guys have said YES, bring it on.
My point, minds are already made up and unless the commissioners are evil people bent on screwing up the county, you guys really are being unfair.
I can understand how nobody wants what could be undesirable uses of land around them, lets stop and think about motivations on both sides.
Personal attacks on the players in this controversy, unless founded in reality, are counterproductive.
I think minds were made up before anyone ever presented an argument for or against the proposals. Nobody is going to change their minds. To stop it, opinions are not going to mean a thing. Be fair in what you say about someone else. These folks are your neighbors and will be there regardless of what happens with Sanderson.
Where's the logic?
After attending Dr. Wing's presentation to the Nash County Board of Commissioners, I found myself wondering how anyone could logically accept a major chicken slaughtering company coming to Nash County, bringing with it smell, bacteria, flies, and low-wage jobs. Line workers would be expected to cut up 90 chickens a minute, and the company is planning to speed up the line. Dr. Wing spoke about workers with injuries from the plant so awful that it destroys their grip. They will not be able to work at all in this condition and cannot fulfull their family needs. There are numerous cuts, breathing problems, and many forms of tendonitis. The yearly turnover is 50%. In a couple of years the plant can completely exhaust the work force willing to take the low-paying jobs and then have to import immigrant workers. According to Sanderson's pay scale, line workers start at $8.50 an hour and can earn $11.55 an hour at the end of one year. The problem is that it takes them five more years to get a 25 cents an hour raise and another five years to get a 15 cents an hour raise. That is only 40 cents an hour more after working there 10 years. This means at the end of the first year, the line worker would be paid $462 a week, and at the end of ten years, he or she would be paid $478 a week. That is only $16 a week more after working there ten years, and taxes and deductions have to come out of that. What kind of a good job is that?
Great Idea to put it in Dortches!
I think this is a great idea! Sanderson can even run the spray field over to Robbie's place. Robbie says it so clean you can drink it! I'm sure he won't mind. Of course, he'll have to be sure his horses don't eat the hay. It will kill them.
a NEW site! adjacent to: 5998 Dortches Blvd, rocky mount
Serious as a snowball on a sunny beach! 5998 Dortches Blvd has some prime property that would make the best alternative site for Sanderson Farms. In fact it should be the primary site. here's why: It is AT the Dortches/hwy 43 off ramps (good for Sanderson trucks).. right there at it. Plenty of land on both sides of the highway 43--west side of I 95. off ramps in place ready to use. good north couth interstate access. Either build it behind 5998 Dortches Blve (hwy 43) and the west side of Tharrington Road OR.. just across the street from 5998 Dorthces Blvd--plenty of land.. and I95 ramp access. what more could you ask for? That area needs some new business/revialization and growth. Heck, easy to get into rocky mount and just a summer walk to downtown Red Oak for a good hot dog. shoot, shouldn't be any problem getting it approved since a Robbie Davis (county commissioner?) lives at 5998 dortches blvd. He's already said he's in favor of the chicken plant and the property owners would luv to sell at a good price to the county who could give it to Sanderson. Forget Southern Nash. start a movement to put it across street or behind 5998 dortches blvd--no doubt southern nash commissioners would go for that.. and so would Mr. Davis. I think the southern nash people won't mind giving up prosperity for the good of Dortches-- and mr davis could watch it being built. heck, let's get it going. suggest it at Monday's meeting.
5998 dortches blvd.. map of the area..
http://www.mapquest.com/ type in the address 5998 dortches blvd rocky mount, nc.. pull up the map.. move it around, and you will see what would make the BEST site for Sandersons. I95 access right there, plenty of land, rolling hills, voters who would just love it at Dortches, just outside of Red Oak--plenty of rolling hills. not a good site? you tell me why.
Misleading Information
One thing that I want to point out, Mr. Murphy says that a full environmental statement has been done. Don't let that confuse you to believe that a full environmental study has been done. A full study has not happened and should be done prior to voting to approve the inducement package. The citizens should not be paying 15 years for something that is going to harm our citizens or resources. Remember when our leaders thought that Electrocities was a good idea? See, how that's turned out! 15 years is a long time to pay. How many boys & girls club requests, or other requests will have to be turned down to pay our debt to Sanderson Farms? Will we have to increase taxes? In the minutes from Lenoir County in Kinston, there is talk of increasing taxes. They are paying Sanderson for 10 years. There is a lot at stake here.
I want to thank Commissioner Wayne Outlaw and Chair Billy Morgan, for putting the citizens of Nash County and the region first. I just wish the other Nash County Commissioners' would do the same.
Davis comments, Murphy tries to poo-poo what expert said
So Republican Commissioner Robbie Davis is champion of the poor now in his comment "to provide jobs for all residents" (meaning the uneducated and unskilled)? It is interesting to read in today's Telegram that Davis's construction company will be building the new Dominos Pizza in Sharpsburg, building there to better cover the southern end of county and "...better service to the Bend of the River Road area." A new Dollar Store has been built across from the Food Lion on Hwy. 97. Expect more Dollar Stores and trailer parks, tacky sprawl, as rumors fly that a chicken plant will be locating down the road.
In this article, County Manager Bob Murphy tries to dismiss what the expert said. (Guess Murphy's interest is self preservation and not rocking the boat at this stage.)
The Telegram did leave out, for example, when Davis attempted to close out the speaker portion of the meeting by thanking Dr. Wing then added smugly that Sanderson has assured the county that they are different, better, than those other poultry companies, Dr. Wing, ever so smoothly and confidently asked Davis where he was getting that information (propaganda). The answer, of course, is from Sanderson company officials!
Sanderson must overcome a major hurdle in securing environmental permits to locate on the proposed plant site. Expect letter-writing protests from those of us who realize just how negative an impact Sanderson would have on our environment and workforce.
Wilson Times presents information not in the RMT
Here's just one of the quotes:
“The processing plant is not the real problem with the industry,” Davis said. “It’s the growing operations. As a board of commissioners, we really aren’t charged of the growing operations."
Dr. Wing along with countless other environmental and health experts would not agree with the commissioner's statement regarding the plant, however the rest of the quote reveals the attitude of the board majority quite well.
Here we have a commissioner admitting the growing operations are a "real problem with the industry" and in the same breath telling us that's not really an issue for the board's consideration.
Wow...
If the health and well being of Nash County citizens is not a subject that merits this board concerns, please direct us to whomever we should be addressing these very serious issues with.
Perhaps it will be someone who would actually listen to the evidence and act responsibly.
That would certainly be a refreshing change.
