If Sanderson Farms is built in our water shed, what extent will residents of Rocky Mount be inconvenienced by the plant’s 1.2 to 1.5 million gallon per day water demand?
This recent rain is welcomed but in another month Rocky Mount will be under voluntary water conservation.
The Tar River Reservoir can be and historically has been stressed June through October because of seasonal decreased rainfall, increased agricultural demands for water and natural water evaporation.
The plan is for Sanderson wells to tap into a deep aquifer and the plant will buy additional water from the city.
You cannot convince me that you can drain from the aquifer and the reservoir and not impact our water supply.
What will be the real cost of Sanderson Farms to the residents of Rocky Mount?

Seeing Is Believing
For a visual image of the amount of water Sanderson would use in just one day, imagine 100 tractor-trailer tankers, like we see filling up our gas stations, lined up and filled with water. That's how much Sanderson would use in one day, and then some. This amounts to 1.5 million gallons a day. Then think about the length of time Sanderson has said they would stay in Nash County...60 years! Where in the world would all that water come from? Does anyone think Sanderson would care if all of Rocky Mount were on water restrictions, permanently? Will Rocky Mount have any water left for its residents? Sanderson does not negotiate, nor care.
Recycling their Chicken Waste
Yup, we citizens will be asked (or prossibly required) to cut back on our water use so Sanderson can wash their chicken waste into our steams and rivers through their spray fields. Every time you take a drink of water, thank Sanderson Farms for their recycled contribution to our water supply.
