The shooting death of a 41-year-old Nash County woman Thursday night is a reminder of why it is important for people to help police.
Portia Hinnant died after someone drove by and shot at her home near Middlesex.
As of Friday evening, the Nash County Sheriff’s Office was seeking information about the incident, including a description of the vehicle. The sheriff’s office did not have any suspects.
Our hearts go out to Hinnant’s family. The sheriff’s office said her son and husband were home when the shooting happened. We can only imagine what they are going through.
If we want to stop senseless acts of violence, we need to be part of the solution.
Law enforcement agencies work to protect our community, but they cannot do everything alone.
There is no excuse for keeping information from authorities that could help identify a suspect. Doing so can help prevent future crimes and keep violent criminals off our streets.
We owe it to our loved ones and our community to come forward and help in any way we can.
We’re not suggesting Hinnant’s neighbors are withholding information. We’re simply urging people to come forward any time they have information about a crime.
People often complain about crime and violence in Rocky Mount, but complaining does nothing. Let’s be part of a solution.
