Count us among the group of folks who want to put the financial meltdown and Great Recession as far behind us as possible.

But that’s not to say that we wouldn’t love to see justice served up to the reckless idiots who got us into this mess in the first place.

A newly formed financial crimes unit, which was announced by President Barack Obama in his State of the Union Address, aims to investigate those responsible for the misconduct and fraud that contributed to the crisis.

The economy has been suffocating for so long that it would be easy to favor moving on over pinning down why this happened. But doing so would hurt us in a couple ways.

We can’t learn from our mistakes and we can’t prevent a repeat of the economic crisis if we don’t understand what caused this pain.

Another reason to get to the bottom of this is to stop pundits and politicians cold if they try to rewrite history.

We need to know who’s feet to hold to the fire, and we need a vivid recollection of our mistakes so we aren’t doomed to similar collapses.

Let’s hope this new mortgage fraud team can give us that closure.
