Help United Way help our community

One of the easiest, most effective ways of helping the people in your own community kicks off its fall campaign this week. Here’s wishing the United Way effort all the success it so richly deserves.

This year’s effort begins with a bang. The United Way Tar River Region is teaming up with the city of Rocky Mount at the city’s Downtown Live! event at 6 p.m. Thursday. Liquid Pleasure will entertain, and food and drink vendors will offer their goods, as well. In addition to all the fun, the event has a serious component – making a difference in your hometown.

Take canned goods or other nonperishable items to the event. United Way will collect them and make sure they go to people in need in our community.

For the rest of the campaign, United Way will accept contributions from individuals, companies and other employers and spread the money around agencies all over the Twin Counties. Your donation goes to help everyone from My Sister’s House to the United Community Ministries homeless shelters to the American Red Cross to the Tar River Mission Clinic to many more worthy agencies.

It would just about require a whole checkbook to donate to so many charities, but one donation helps them all. Many employers in the Twin Counties offer a payroll deduction option for employees to help United Way every pay period. Making such a gift costs little, but does a world of good right here in your own community.

Take a lawn chair and some canned vegetables Thursday. Enjoy the music and the feeling you get from helping others.
