Reader says a vote for Tyson is a vote for jobs in Nash County

I find it interesting that we have so many candidates running for the District 4 Nash County commissioner’s race. In the past, very few people seemed to want a job that had very few benefits. Danny Tyson has held the position for the past four years and I think he has served his district well.

The entire campaign is centered on the Sanderson Farms issue, each candidate having their respective views. I think Danny Tyson has had as thoughtful of a position on this matter as could be had. Over the past 25 years, Nash County’s economic engine has sputtered along as we have continued to lose our industrial base. Competition for these jobs from other geographical areas has been fierce. We continually hurt our chances by pointing out that we cannot support the current industries. For example, past comments in the news about Consolidated Diesel Company hiring 150 more employees in the coming year, and if they could not hire them locally they would bring them in from the outside. Firestone seems to always have openings, but candidates cannot pass drug test or simply do not want to work the schedule. In addition, I am reminded of the interview with the Sam’s Club management discussing the level of difficultly filling positions prior to the Rocky Mount store opening.

Our mall will soon have more empty space than occupied when both Sears and Best Buy complete their closures.

I believe Sanderson Farms will be a welcome addition to our industrial base. The largest segment of the Nash County economy is agriculture. We absolutely should take this opportunity to play on our strengths. This company would not make a $100 million investment in our community without careful consideration of our ability to support their needs, including water and waste disposal.

Danny Tyson recognizes this election is about jobs that would directly enhance the economic well-being of our community. We need to offer our citizens jobs in which they can be successful. I believe most people want to work and will work, given the opportunity. Unfortunately, our local economy has not supported all of our citizens in the recent past. Sanderson Farms offers opportunities for our community that will allow us to continue to grow. By voting for Danny Tyson, we signal to more industries that Nash County is ready to encourage growth and offer opportunities.

I encourage you to vote for Danny Tyson for County Commissioner.

way to go

way to go mr. joyner.

Jobs for Who?

Mr. Joyner have you given any thought that there are so many candidates running because Tyson past or maybe recent record does not sit well with his constituents?

Mr. Joyner do not be so naive to think that the 1,100 jobs that Sanderson Farms may bring would be permanently filled by our local unemployed citizens. You are likely correct that certain people in this area will profit from SF's entry into this community and the County’s tax base will get a quick fix. There has to be a reason that some local business entities and some county commissioners are in favor of SF. We need to look beyond a quick fix and bring GOOD industries into this area.

Mr. Joyner don’t be fool by associating SF with our agricultural heritage. SF is a food processing industry, don’t be mislead by their use of Farm in their name, it ain’t no farm.

Mr. Joyner are you following our county’s voluntary water conservation guidelines? Better get use to them before they becomes mandatory. If SF does come, the upside may be that once our water becomes polluted and undrinkable, we would be force to drink bottle water which would cut back on tap water usage

Mr. Joyner as for your closing comments, you need to do some research about the poultry industry. This type of industry will not “. . . enhance the economic well-being of our community”, nor provide permanent jobs for our unemployed, nor signal to more GOOD industries that Nash county encourages growth and offers opportunities. To the contrary, most other GOOD industries that provide good wages and working conditions would look elsewhere and not Nash County.

Way to go, Joe!

Ditto!

Vote for the Canditate that Can See Beyond the End of Her Nose

A vote for Barnes is a vote for the future and the welfare of ALL the citizens in her District. District 4 needs a commissioner that will truly represent its citizens, not one that favors a quick fix at the expense of the long term health and welfare of its citizens. Barnes will be truthful to her constituents and not play on their ignorance with promises that are contrary to past records. District 4 needs a representative that is not swayed by the Good-Ole-Boy system. District 4 needs a commissioner that can look beyond the end of her nose.

Barnes is BETTER

FYI: Joyner is President of Nash Produce Company, a direct competitor of Barnes Farming Corporation, the family business of Lisa Stone Barnes. Mr. Joyner is saying that there are already jobs available in our area through CDC and Firestone, but our labor force is unwilling to work in these companies or cannot pass the drug tests- and that the answer is to bring Sanderson in to provide more jobs?! There are already over 1,000 jobs available through farming in Nash Co, yet they must bring in unskilled labor from Mexico to tend their crops, Joyner knows this. Sanderson is not the answer to our unemployment issues. We need to rise above and offer our people something better. The solution is not to bring in more unskilled jobs, the solution is to bring higher paying jobs that meet all skill levels. Furthermore, Tyson is on the board for Nash Community College, a cause that should be supporting training our unskilled workforce. He should be working to provide our new graduates with better opportunities in Nash Co! Lisa Barnes is not only for jobs, but GOOD jobs. The average wage in Nash Co is ~$16/hr compared to Wilson Co which is >$18/hr and we're going to downgrade even further by bringing $8.50/hr jobs via Sanderson Farms. A vote for Lisa Barnes is a vote for BETTER jobs and a BETTER Nash County.

Tyson Doesn't See the Big Picture

Danny Tyson has voted in favor of all Sanderson issues time after time, even in the face of all the facts and research that plainly show Sanderson Farms is a very bad idea for Nash County. It is ludicrous to think that any other company would come to Nash County and locate anywhere near a chicken slaughterhouse. Municipalites in an alliance from Raleigh to the coast have signed a resolution opposing this Sanderson Farms location. They know that a plant that will put excess nitrogen and phosphorus into the rivers will cause the state to impose stricter regulations on how they dispose of their water. Therefore, the cost of operation will rise. Companies want to keep cost down, not see it rise. The only other company that would be interested in coming after the arrival of Sanderson would be another poultry processing company. That is beginning to happen in other locations where Sanderson operates. As chicken plants come to an area, poverty rises. Do we want to open the door to more and more chicken processing? This idea smells almost as bad as the 568 unregulated chicken houses that will be needed for Sanderson. Land is now being purchased to build those houses. Will they come to your neighborhood? Bert Daniel and Lisa Barnes know that Sanderson will downgrade Nash County to the point that no other company will want to come here. Lisa is right. We should look to the West for better industries. Bert has led the opposition to Sanderson's coming to Nash County since 2010. He has stayed the course because he cares about the people of this county and our quality of life. As a resident of District 4, I am proud to support Bert Daniel who has a vision for the betterment of Nash County.

No vote for Tyson

Good try, Mr. Joyner. Yes, Sanderson will employ the group home residents Andre Knight brought to a County Commissioners' meeting - til the first pay period when they find themselves laid off and drawing unemployment. Sanderson will bring in - wants - foreign workers. Look at the class action suit against the Moultrie, Ga., "show place" plant alleging they knowingly have been hiring illegals. Nash and Wilson counties will become a magnet for the unskilled and uneducated, a populace barely eking out a living above the poverty level and swamping our schools and social services. You think Nash has an image problem now? Add a poultry processing plant and what comes with it. This is a NO vote for Tyson - and later for his cohort, Robbie Davis when Davis is up for re-election. Vote for Lisa Barnes. She can think for herself - not play follow the leader - and has both experience and innovative ideas. She thinks more highly of Nash's potential than does Tyson.
