On Saturday, March 10 at 8 p.m., the Tar River Orchestra and Chorus League will sponsor Percy Sledge in concert at the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts at N.C. Wesleyan College. The community is cordially invited to join with the orchestra and chorus to make this a successful event.

Percy Sledge is an internationally renowned artist whose career dates back to 1966 with the release of his most famous recording, “When a Man Loves a Woman.” During the ensuing years, he was a very sought-after artist who became as popular internationally as in the United States. His popularity was revived once again for a new generation of listeners when in 1987, “When a Man Loves a Woman” was selected by Oliver Stone for the soundtrack of the Academy Award winning film “Platoon.”

Today, he continues to take concert-goers down memory lane as he enjoys a full concert schedule.

The purpose of sponsoring this concert by the Tar River Orchestra and Chorus League is twofold. First, the League is the fundraising arm of the Tar River Choral and Orchestral Society Inc., and this concert is a fundraising event.

Secondly, the orchestra nd chorus constantly seek ways to involve the entire community in the programs and performances and we are aware that symphony and classical music are not universally appreciated. For that reason, the orchestra is branching out into other music genres in an effort to encourage support from those who might enjoy more varied musical experiences.

The League is excited to bring this legendary artist to Rocky Mount and sincerely hopes and encourages the public to support this significant fundraising event as the organization strives to raise funds to support this very important cultural asset in our community.
