Cancer patient seeks leftover yarn

Rocky Mount Telegram

Monday, October 26, 2009

Last winter I crocheted hats for cancer patients and donated them to Hospice in Rocky Mount. At that time I had no idea that I would be crocheting some for myself because of cancer and the loss of my hair.

I have Non-Hodgkins large “B” cell lymphoma of the lung. As an elderly person, I thought about not taking treatments because of my age but opted to take chemotherapy and have tolerated it much better than I expected.

During this time of treatments, I have crocheted hats and given them to the Southeastern Medical Oncology Center in Wilson where I receive chemotherapy.

Having very limited income, I’m asking your readers who might have unused or left-over yarn if they would like to donate it that I might be able to continue making the hats free of cost to the local cancer treatment centers in our area.

There are so many types of cancer and different colors that designate for each type. I crochet a variety of colors so any color of yarn would be useful. I wear any color that will go with what I happen to be wearing at the time.

To me, these hats are more comfortable than the wigs and are so easy to just put on and go. I usually pin on an artificial flower or a large attractive pin when I go away from home.

I will acknowledge anyone who donates their unused yarns for this cause, and I know our father in heaven will bless them for their giving. Also, I would appreciate so much to receive letters and cards from others who have cancer or are survivors and any other dear people who just want to send encouragement. I will try to answer as many as possible.

God has been good to me all these 77 years of my life, and my desire is to give to others what I am able in some way. He in the past, present and future knows the times of my stay here on Earth, and my prayer is to be of service for him and in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
