CINCINNATI — The National Private Truck Council again has honored a Whitakers native for his longtime safe-driving record as a trucker.

Bobby Mann Sr. was inducted into the council’s Driver Hall of Fame at an April 18 ceremony attended by 1,000 industry representatives at the council’s annual conference. He was one of only four drivers named to the hall this year and one of 85 ever to have received the honor.

A CPC Logistics driver assigned to Hospira Worldwide Inc in Rocky Mount, Mann has driven 5.5 million accident-free miles in his 40-year career. The distance equals 220 trips around the Earth or 11 round trips to the moon and back.

Mann only is the fifth CPC driver to be named to the hall.

The honor is his second from the council. Mann was named a Driver All-Star in September 2010 in a ceremony at the council’s annual safety conference in Washington.

In civic life, Mann is a deacon at Immanuel House of Prayer Church in Woodland, where he also has received awards for stewardship and faithful service. His wife, Jane, is a public school teacher.
