They are the masters of customer service.

Walt Disney World theme parks are renowned the world over for their guest-centered attitude, attention to detail and drive to exceed expectations, said Fred Brooks, director of the Small Business Center at Nash Community College.

Rocky Mount isn’t the Magic Kingdom, but business owners and employers can learn how to create their own magic by attending “Customer Service ‘Disney Style,’” a seminar offered by the center, Brooks said. The seminar is from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 11 at the college.

“It basically takes some of the Disney methodologies and talks to those. ... The purpose of the seminar is to help businesses and their employees do a better job of providing good customer service,” Brooks said.

The class is one of the many seminars offered by the centers at Nash and Edgecombe Community colleges year round. The classes are free at Edgecombe and free or low-cost at Nash.

To accommodate people’s schedules, classes are one-time seminars instead of being stretched over several weeks, Brooks said.

The seminars are designed to create jobs by helping start new businesses or grow existing ones, said Ed Ormsby, Edgecombe’s director. Classes range from five core programs on starting a business to subjects as varied as using social media to find new customers, building leadership skills and conquering negativity in the workplace, depending on the school.

Edgecombe has a class on selling called “Sales for People Who Don’t Like to Sell,” which next will be offered from 3 to 6 p.m. Sept. 16 at Tarboro campus, he said. It demonstrates how every job comes down to selling something, whether it is a product, a business or a service.

“We want to make it easy for people to communicate with others when they are selling. ... We welcome questions. We want the people to leave with as much knowledge on the subject as we can give them,” Ormsby said.
