It only took Rocky Mount Public Utility crews 23 minutes to restore power Monday afternoon.

Utility Director Rich Worsinger said the outage happened at 4:38 p.m. when a squirrel got into one of the city’s electric stations on the 1700 block of Country Club Road and caused a circuit to short. Local crews were able to isolate the problem and fix it quickly, restoring power to 1,144 customers shortly after 5 p.m.

Animals are the No. 1 cause of outages for power systems, but animal guards – rubber insulators that prevent animals from causing shorts – are installed at the city’s substations.
